{DIY} Picture Ledge

In case you didn’t already know, I am a crazy dog lady. If you open the camera app on my phone and scroll through my pictures, 98% of them are of my dogs. I follow them around like paparazzi every day because they are just so darn cute. All my fellow dog people can relate. Don’t lie, you know you get excited when someone says, “Do you have a picture of your dog?” Oh do I? Ya wanna see them playing? Eating? Sniffing around? Wrestling each other? Being good? Being bad? Wearing a shirt? Wearing my hat? Riding in the car? Sleeping? I got you covered! I cannot even stand how cute they are. I just squeeze their faces all the time. And yes, in case you are wondering, pitbulls love to be squeezed.

When I realized we had a huge blank wall in our bedroom that needed some love, I decided I needed a wall dedicated to displaying pictures of my squishy face wiggle butts. The easy part was making this neat picture ledge. The tough part was choosing which photos to display out of the 5,059 I have saved on my phone.

Lets make a picture ledge! Bonus, it only cost me $12!

{Supplies List}

  • One 1×4 (cut at desired length)
  • Two 1×2’s (cut at desired length)
  • Liquid nails
  • Finishing nails
  • Stain color of your choice
  • Spax Screws (to anchor your shelf to the wall)

Start by making sure all three boards are cut to your desired length. I made mine around 4 1/2 feet to fit my picture frames and fill up my wall space. Quickly sand the edges if you have any rough parts to avoid splinters.

Stack your pieces of wood as shown in the above picture. The first 1×2 and 1×4 should create an “L” shape. The second 1×2 gets anchored to the front to keep your pictures from sliding off the shelf. Got it?

Ok, now use your liquid nails to glue the pieces together. I just drew a thin line across the board and lined up my next piece of wood on top of it. Once I was happy with the placement, I used a little painters tape (where are my wood clamps again??) to secure it tightly while it dried. Be sure to wipe away any excess liquid nails so you can stain the pieces evenly.

Once my glue was dry, I peeled off the tape and added a few little finishing nails on each side to secure it just a little more. It was really solid with just the liquid nails, but I also liked the look of a few nail heads on the front of the shelf.

Now, just stain that baby and use your spax screws (drilled into the studs) to hang it on the wall. Easy peasy!
